Gang Awareness – January 2010

Detective B.J. Daniels and Office Rose spoke to a group of mentors on the issue of gangs in Lexington and Davidson County.  Below is a recap of the information shared.

What is a Gang?

  • a group of youngsters or adolescents who associate closely, often exclusively, for social reasons, esp. such a group engaging in delinquent behavior
  • a group of persons associated for some criminal or other antisocial purpose
  • a group of people with compatible tastes or mutual interests who gather together for social reasons
Why do individuals join gangs?  Peer pressure, protection, respect, MONEY, sense of belonging.

Gangs in Davidson County – there are 13 validated gangs in Davidson County.

  • “TRG” – Tiny Rascal Gang (Northern end of the county – Most Violent Gang.  They have 36 validated members in Lexington)
  • Blood Gang – (have 25-30 validated members in Lexington)
  • Crip Gang – (have 30+ validated members in Lexington)
  • Asian Gangs
  • Hispanic Gangs

Gang Validation is the process that the police department undergoes to determine if an individual is a gang member.  Can be validated by – self admitting, admitting to a source about gang involvement, hand signs and clothing, tattoos, flags or bandanas, and other physical evidence.

Reliable Sources – informants, family members, teachers

Gang Initiations – beat in’s/robberies/”sexed in” or raped

Gang Symbols –

  • “BP” – bullet proof
  • 5 point star – Blood Gang
  • 6 point star – Crip Gang
  • Teardrop – could be a symbol that the individual has killed someone or has been to prison
  • Spider Web – white supremacy
  • Cross/Skulls – KKK

Educating Parents and Teachers on what to look for is the best way to help prevent individuals from joining gangs and the best way to help get individuals out of gangs.
